A Diamond Necklace
Jewelry
We were asked by a leading private wealth management firm to oversee the valuation and sale of diverse items from a large collection that had been formed by a Baltimore family prominent in American professional sports. The collection included Modern paintings, English and French furniture and decorations, sports memorabilia and couture.
The centerpiece of the collection was a large group of jewelry, including several impressive diamond rings, necklaces and ear clips as well as everyday decorative pieces. After a thorough inventory and valuation of all the jewelry we arranged for it to be sold in two different auctions: one for the most valuable pieces in a Magnificent Jewelry sale at a major auction house, the other in an Important Jewelry sale at a regional firm.
As the jewelry market has shown explosive global growth over the past two decades, with a staggering surge in demand from all corners of the world, the bidding for the most valuable pieces of this collection at auction was robust and highly competitive, especially for the large diamonds. For example, a stunning diamond ring set with a rectangular-cut diamond weighing 17.36 carats and mounted in platinum, estimated at $200,000-300,000, brought $437,000. Similarly a pair of diamond ear clips, each approximately 10 carats in weight and estimated at $150,000-200,000, soared over the high estimate in achieving a price of $317,000. Perhaps the star piece was an exquisite sapphire and diamond ring, estimated at $25,000-35,000, which after prolonged bidding from the room and on the phone brought $227,000.
Even the decorative jewelry sold well in excess of the pre-sale estimates, and overall this marvelous collection of jewelry once worn by a lady of elegance and good taste made a total of $1,480,692.
